Nikita & Paul’s Wedding at Crook Hall & Gardens, Durham
Nikita and Paul’s wedding at Crook Hall was an absolute joy to photograph. It was my first time at the venue — and what a place! A proper medieval building full of character, with tonnes of period features and absolutely stunning gardens. The hall itself is full of charm, and despite its age, it’s light and airy — so no stress about dark photos!
Getting Ready in the Attic Room
I met Nikita while she was getting ready in the attic room at Crook Hall, a gorgeous space with exposed beams and lovely soft light pouring in from the window. I had to photograph her dress there as the light hit it just right and made it glow. A perfect start to the day.
The Groom’s Wardrobe Mishap
Meanwhile, Paul was enjoying himself with his best man. Things got lively quickly — he ended up giving him a piggyback, which backfired when he heard a rip and realised he’d split his trousers… right down the back! Boxers on full display. Luckily, Greta (my amazing assistant) caught the whole thing. Crisis averted though — we found a needle and thread and patched him up in no time.
A Medieval Ceremony in a Hall with Twinkly Lights
Nikita and Paul tied the knot in the old medieval hall at Crook Hall, and it looked magical. With stone walls and fairy lights, it had a cosy, romantic feel. There’s a little balcony in the hall too, so while I photographed the front, Greta captured everything from above. Teamwork.
Strolling the Gardens (With Views of Durham Castle!)
It was a cracking sunny day, and we went for a walk around the gardens with Nikita and Paul. You even get lovely views of Durham Castle from parts of the grounds. With flowers in full bloom and the fizz flowing, everyone was in good spirits.
I’d already done an engagement shoot with these two, so they were relaxed and laughing constantly. We had loads of fun finding pretty spots for their portraits — little archways, walled gardens, and paths framed by flowers.
A Laid-Back Wedding Breakfast & Rowing Club Fun
The wedding breakfast was set outside under a canopy — surrounded by flowers, bunting, and twinkly lights. It was relaxed, beautiful, and very “them.” The centrepieces were glass vases filled with cream blooms and greenery, which suited the rustic style of Crook Hall & Gardens down to the ground.
After food, guests played games, kids ran around the gardens, and there was even archery. Then I stumbled upon Nikita with her rowing club mates, who decided to recreate boat formation on the lawn — all sat in a row while Nikita shouted commands. It was hilarious. I had to get it on camera.
Dancing in the Medieval Hall
As the sun went down, we headed back inside the medieval hall. The lights were low, and the atmosphere was lovely. Nikita and Paul had their first dance together — then her dad joined in, and it was such a sweet moment to witness.
A Perfect Spot for a Characterful Wedding
If you’re on the hunt for a wedding venue that’s full of character, has beautiful gardens, and gives you space to make the day your own, Crook Hall and Gardens is well worth a look.
It’s one of those rare places where history meets nature — with loads of light, even indoors, and so many spots for stunning photos.
